A Simple Way to Recognise Your True Ambition

I am using the word recognise here because our true ambition is not something we find outside of us when we have enough time and money to do so. Instead, It’s something we were already doing voluntarily with joy.

Did anything come to your mind?

It could be something that is insignificant to the societal standard of success. Something that might be seen as non-essential (or weird). Yet, it lights you up and that makes people around you feel lifted.

It could be as simple as:

  1. cooking meals with leftovers in the fridge

  2. folding clothes in a unique way (Marie Kondo, a Japanese organizing consultant with her Netflix show, books and business empire)

  3. good at making certain types of jokes (humour woohoo)

  4. pro at holding chopsticks in the traditional way

  5. collecting cushion covers

Start Observing Yourself

Start observing the things you do voluntarily, without obligation, financial or social incentives. Write them down, as well as how you feel when doing those things (check out the feeling wheel). Write those things down without judgment, whether it’s productive, smart, or have high ROI. Do it for a week or a month and see the evidence of your true ambition for yourself.

Why contextualize our observation? When we are used to going through our day in autopilot mode, we don’t notice what we did and how we feel. Putting observation into words is a very powerful way for us to realize what’s really going on.

Be Careful of the Shiny Traps

Often, we spend a lot of time analysing someone’s success and trying to take the exact actions hoping to achieve the same result. It makes sense to the mind to follow a path someone already walked. However, the more we look at others, the less we are aware of ourselves. The more we live like someone else, the further we are from our authentic selves.

Spend time with yourself, No one can observe you like how you can observe yourself. Cultivate a relationship with yourself, set a date, give this activity a name, and make a decision to choose yourself every day.
